What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a difficulty learning to read and write. This is due to the brain being unable to translate thought and images from the eyes and ears into language, that is, reading or writing.

Dyslexia is not:

  • Lack of intelligence
  • A disease
  • Mental retardation
  • Brain damage
  • Problems with hearing or eyesight

Who suffers from Dyslexia?
People from all races, ages and parts of society suffer from dyslexia. It is often a family trait. However, mainly men get it; only one in eight sufferers are women.

What causes Dyslexia?
No one is sure what causes dyslexia and there have been studies investigating the impact of low birth weight, food additives, chemical allergies and links with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Thus far, there have been no conclusive results.

What are the symptoms?

  • Difficulty reading and spelling
  • Getting letters and words in reverse order
  • Finding it hard to remember letters and recognising the sound of words
  • Difficulty with understanding and expressing concepts of space and time
  • A family history of reading problems

Many dyslexic people are highly creative (and are often very good at maths) and sometimes have an above average IQ.
