Diet

Diet and Lifestyle
The principles of the Feingold Diet are that the hyperactive child's behaviour is adversely affected by:

  • all food and drink containing artificial colouring and flavouring, including tartrazines, sulphites, potassium and sodium nitrate, benzoic acid, BHA, BHT, MSG and butylene glycol

  • natural foods containing salicylates, including apples, almonds, cherries, strawberries, tomatoes, pickles, grapes, peaches, plums, raisins, oranges, vinegar

  • salicylic acid is also, commonly found in phenolic compounds added to food, aspirin, cough mixture and many other children's medication

Suspect foods are removed from the diet and gradually reintroduced, whilst, behaviour is monitored by a psychologist. Sugar imbalance, deficiency of essential fatty acids (EFAs) and vitamins & minerals and excess lead and copper are other possible contributing factors to AD/HD.

Although there is no proof about the role of nutrition in AD/HD, by a process of eliminating certain foods from the diet symptoms may be alleviated. However, any dietary changes need to be medically supervised by a psychologist and a qualified dietitian.
