Local authority sheltered housing
Local authority sheltered housing is only available to rent. None of
it is 'right to buy'.
To apply, contact your local housing department and ask if you qualify
for sheltered housing. If you do, someone will usually visit you to
complete an application form.
What are my chances of success with a local authority? Waiting
lists range from a few months to a few years, depending on where you
live. Some housing departments use a points system to work out where
you are on the waiting list. Factors like your health and the suitability
of your current housing are taken into account. Others have fixed lists
based on the date you join.
Most housing departments insist you are a resident of their area for
at least a year. If you aren't, you may still be able to join the waiting
list but you won't be offered housing until you satisfy the residency
requirement.
If you want to move to another area to be closer to family or friends
who will support you, the housing department may overlook residency
requirements, although this is unlikely because of demand.
So how long will I have to wait with a local authority?
It often depends on how flexible you are. If you say you are willing
to consider whatever sheltered housing is available, you may be offered
housing much sooner. Local authorities sometimes nominate people for
housing association sheltered housing in their area as well. This means
you can get on both waiting lists at once, which helps your chances.
But ask your housing department for details of housing association properties
you may be referred to, so you can establish whether you would like
to live there or not.
