Try to build an appetite before meals rather than eating mechanically
at a given hour. A walk or a little gentle exercise before breakfast
enlivens the digestive system, getting the body ready for food.
If alcohol definitely does not conflict with any medication, a small
aperitif such as a dry sherry (taken in moderation) may help to open
the appetite.
Appetite can also be sharpened by careful meal preparation, admiring
the food's quality, smell and feel.
Good digestion is vital
Chew food well. Pay careful attention to bowel movements. If you
are not regular, increase fresh vegetables, fruit and whole grains.
A sluggish digestion can ruin not only the appetite but also the quality
of life through constipation or indigestion.
Bitter foods have become almost absent from our diets but may be very
important in stimulating the production of bile in the digestive system.
Some herbs and vegetables are bitter, as are digestive bitters like
Underberg. These may be useful in toning the digestion.
Drinking plenty of fresh water is also important in maintaining proper
digestion.
