Hypertension is essentially high blood pressure. While blood pressure
naturally tends to increase with age it is important to keep high pressure
under control as it gives increased risk of developing heart disease
or suffering a stroke.
Symptoms of Hypertension
Often there are few symptoms, but they can include severe headaches,
dizziness, shortness of breath and visual disturbances. Causes of hypertension
are smoking, drinking excessive alcohol, obesity, family history, lack
of exercise and social or occupational stress.
Hypertension Can be Reversed
Hypertension can be reversed, but the sufferer should take their health
in hand gently on a day to day basis. Sudden or extreme changes should
be avoided and introduced in a planned way with commitment.
Doctors prescribe anti-hypersensitive drugs to treat hypertension. Other
drug regimes such as those for arthritis may have to be discontinued.
In general, the underlying cause of hypertension must be addressed,
reducing the risk factors. Excess weight should be lost as a priority.
A gentle exercise routine may be adopted - walking, swimming, a little
Tai Chi or yoga in the mornings, or an appropriate keep fit class.
Smoking should be stopped and alcohol consumption should be lowered
or discontinued.
The diet should contain little salt and very reduced fat levels. Dairy
products such as butter, cheese, and eggs should be rationed and over-consumption
of meat avoided. Fried or other fatty foods should be replaced by steamed
or boiled preparations. Fresh, uncooked foods like salads and fruit
are even better. Garlic in the food or in capsule form may help to cleanse
furred or stiffening arteries.
