Your baby's stages of development
Rates of development may vary widely from baby to baby so don't worry
if your baby doesn't seem to be hitting key stages at exactly the right
moment. If you do have any serious concerns though these should be raised
with your doctor or health visitor.
Senses Working Overtime
Babies are born with all five senses functioning from day one. Reflexes
should also be well developed and will be tested by your doctor or health
visitor in one of their early visits.
Eyesight is one of the key senses that develops during the first four
months. From birth babies can focus on things for limited periods and
by two weeks will recognise faces and follow movement. They may even
begin to form their mouth into a smile.
At four to six weeks they will focus on objects and follow them and
by two to three months they will look at their hands with growing interest.
Balance and Movement
During the first four months the baby will be able to support his or
her own head and by about three months should be able to lift the head
when lying on his or her tummy.
They will be about four months old when they can roll onto their back
from this position.
