Bottle Feeding

Keeping Bottles Clean
Whether you are using formula milk or expressing breast milk for bottle feeds you will need to ensure all bottles, teats and other implements used in the process are thoroughly cleaned.

First rinse the empty bottles with cold water, then all the bottle components should be thoroughly washed in hot soapy water. Use a bottle brush and if possible a teat brush to ensure feeding holes are not blocked.

Everything should then be rinsed before sterilisation. There are three methods of sterilisation: cold water, boiling water and steam.

Cold Water Sterilisation
Use a sterilising tank or large plastic container with lid. Fill with water and add sterilising tablets or solution according to manufacturers' recommendations. Then immerse all non-metallic bottle-feeding equipment in the water, ensure nothing is above the waterline and remove air bubbles.

Check manufacturers' instructions and leave bottles for the required amount of time. Fluid should be changed daily.

Boiling Water Sterilisation
Fill a large pan with water and immerse the bottles and caps, eliminating all air bubbles. Put the lid on the pan and boil for five minutes then add the teats and boil for a further five minutes. Leave equipment in pan with the lid in place until you are ready to fill the bottles.

Steam Sterilisation
This method uses an electric sterilisation unit. Use according to manufacturer's instructions.
