Formula Feeds
For those mothers who cannot or do not want to breastfeed, a special
baby formula should be used. Cows' milk is not suitable for babies under
nine months, although some experts recommend not introducing cows' milk
until after the baby's first birthday. This milk is difficult to digest
for infants and is nutritionally incomplete for a developing baby.
Formula milks are based on cows' milk, but are fortified with iron and
vitamin D while the energy, protein, vitamin and mineral levels are
altered to measure up to the composition of breast milk.
Types of formula milk
Roughly speaking, formula milk is divided into three main types: whey-based,
curd-based and soya-based.
The whey-based formulas are more appropriate for young babies since
they more closely resemble breast milk while the curd-based varieties
require a more mature digestive system and contain higher levels of
protein and minerals.
Soya-based milks are appropriate for vegan babies or infants with an
allergy to cows' milk. Formula comes as a powder or a ready-mixed milk.
