Nutritional Health During Reproductive
Years
We all know that a woman should be especially careful with her diet
during the nine months of pregnancy, but if you are planning to conceive
start taking a look at what you eat well in advance. A healthy, balanced
diet before conception can actually lead to an easier pregnancy and
better-nourished baby.
Why nutrition helps
Pregnancy triggers great changes in a woman's body and making sure you're
eating the right food helps your system get ready for those changes.
A developing baby demands a good supply of energy, carbohydrate, protein,
fat, vitamins and minerals, not only during pregnancy, but in those
crucial first months of breast-feeding.
The woman who has been careful to eat a balanced diet will already have
built up reserves of those necessary nutrients before pregnancy. She
will then be able to meet her baby's needs without radical changes to
her existing eating habits. If, on the other hand those reserves are
not built up before conception, a woman can be physically vulnerable
to conditions like anaemia and other diet-related disorders.
