Contaminates in Breast Milk
Alcohol
Human milk is very sensitive to alcohol. Even a couple of units will
change the smell of your milk and can deplete supplies for up to three
hours.
Some infants react unfavourably to the alcohol which can make them restless.
Drinking heavily can upset your hormonal balance and inhibit the 'letdown'
reflex.
Caffeine
Again breast milk is rapidly affected by caffeine. Drinking more than
six cups of coffee, tea, cocoa or cola can cause the baby to have difficulty
in sleeping.
Drugs
Cannabis can also interfere with the 'letdown' reflex and traces of
the drug have been found in breastmilk.
Hard drugs like heroin and cocaine are also passed on with all the associated
dangers they bring.
Medication
Any drug is passed on through breast milk so only those medications
that are absolutely necessary should be taken by nursing mothers and
only after consultation with your doctor or pharmacist.
Nicotine
Crying, colicky babies can be the result of smoking while breastfeeding.
The amount of milk produced and the letdown reflex may be inhibited.
Smoking around young babies is thought to be implicated in some cases
of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
