This is a severe and disabling
mental disorder (or group of disorders) where there is a breakdown in
thought processes, contact with reality and emotional responsiveness.
It tends to first develop during adolescence or early adulthood, and
can show patterns of occurring within families. Delusions and hallucinations
(especially "hearing voices") are common and the patient can feel that
their thoughts, sensations and actions are controlled by or shared with
other people. Sufferers become withdrawn from society and lose energy
and initiative.
There are four main subtypes of schizophrenia:
i) Paranoid schizophrenia
ii) Disorganized schizophrenia
iii) Catatonic schizophrenia
iv) Undifferentiated schizophrenia
There is a lot of research ongoing into the causes of schizophrenia,
but the exact causes still largely remain unclear. There appear to be
two main groups of causes:
Biological causes
These include genetic and inherited tendencies, abnormalities in
brain structure and brain chemistry, and problems in brain development.
Psychological causes
These include learned, unusual behaviour, environmental stress,
domestic problems and disturbed patterns of family communication.
Schizophrenia is a highly complex disorder and its causes seem to lie
within both categories.
