Seasonal affective disorder

Overview for Dietary and Lifestyle or Treatment info see links at bottom

Seasonal Affective Disorder (also called SAD) is a type of depression which is directly related to the seasons and the amount of natural sunlight. Symptoms include a drop in energy level, oversleeping, increased appetite and weight gain, difficulty in concentrating and an overall feeling of sadness and irritability. These will usually begin in late autumn, peak in winter and tail off again in spring. Some people with SAD have mild or occasionally severe periods of mania during the spring or summer. Cravings for carbohydrate foods have also been reported in those suffering from SAD.

Women are the most likely to suffer from SAD (about 70- 80%) although men and children can also suffer from the illness. In general, it usually doesn't start in people younger than 20.
