Apnoea - short spells when
breathing stops. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is when the throat is sucked
closed during sleep, this condition affects mainly middle aged people.
When we fall asleep the throat muscles relax so that the throat becomes
narrower each time we breathe in - if it becomes so narrow that it is
just a split, the air flow is disturbed hence a loud vibration ie. Snoring.
If the throat were to become either partially or completely blocked,
usually the person would automatically fight for breath until they wake
up. A loud snore or gasp and frantic movement of the body is how the
apnoea manifests itself; this is sufficient as a kind of warning sign
for the person's throat opening muscles to work so that they can resume
breathing - usually falling asleep relatively quickly soon after.
