Menopause is the stage in
a woman's life when her ovaries cease producing eggs every four weeks.
Menstruation ceases, which indicates that she is no longer able to bear
children. This event can occur at any age between the mid-thirties and
the mid-fifties (most commonly between 45-55.) Menstruation may decrease
gradually or there may be a sudden and complete cessation of periods.
At this time there is a change in the balance of the sex hormones in
the body - a fall in the amount of oestrogen circulating in the body
produced by the non-functioning ovary - that can result in hot flushes,
palpitations, and dryness of the mucous membranes of the vagina. Some
women can also experience emotional disturbances in connection with
this.
