HIV - the Human Immunodeficiency
Virus - causes the disease known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency
Syndrome.) HIV is a virus which gradually depletes the immune system
and its effectiveness in fighting off infections, which under normal
circumstances the body could easily deal with. The virus is spread by
unprotected sexual intercourse, infected blood (eg in injecting drug
users who share needles) and blood products, and can be passed from
mother to child in the womb.
The virus infects certain types of cells of the immune system, and eventually
destroys them so that the sufferer is less able to deal with other infections
and illnesses - leading to AIDS. This occurs following HIV infection
(developing after a variable period of 'incubation' of the virus) when
a specific type or types of illness develop in the diagnosed positive person
- for example pneumonia, certain cancers, tumours and fungal infections.
AIDS eventually leads to death due to such illnesses.
