This is the name which covers
a number of infections of the skin, which manifests itself by blister
formation.
Herpes Zoster (shingles): After the primary infection the virus can
lie dormant and re-activation causes shingles. Pain and tingling becomes
apparent in the dermatome affected. Dermatome means the areas of skin
supplied by a particular nerve and if that is attacked the area will
be affected causing pain. If the infection involves the area between
two ribs, the infection will not cross to the corresponding area on
the other side.
The commonest areas affected are the lower thoracic (chest) zones and
the ophthalmic (eye) division of the trigeminal nerve. This can be serious
as the patient can be left with a post herpetic neuralgia (nerve involvement
causing pain) which could continue for years.
