Nb: Hepatitis is a
collective term used to describe a range of conditions, which cause
inflammation of the liver, commonly as a result of viral infection.
There are several different types of viral hepatitis. See also Hepatitis
A and Hepatitis
B.
This is a virus which is spread in a similar way to Hepatitis B, and
is a major cause of hepatitis following blood transfusion. Around 50%
of those infected become chronic carriers of the disease, around 5%
develop liver cirrhosis (of which 15% are at risk of cancer of the liver)
and relapses of the condition can occur. Symptoms are again similar
to those for Hepatitis B - but often the disease can go unsuspected
with no real symptoms. Intravenous drug users, homosexuals, and those
practicing unprotected sexual intercourse, especially with multiple
partners have an increased risk of developing the disease.
