Hepatitis B

Overview for Dietary and Lifestyle or Treatment info see links at bottom

Nb: Hepatitis is a collective term used to describe a range of conditions, which cause inflammation of the liver, commonly as a result of viral infection. There are several different types of viral hepatitis. See also Hepatitis A and Hepatitis C.

This form of virus is spread via the blood, bodily secretions and unprotected sexual intercourse. This disease is highly transmissable and infectious. Those at high risk include homosexuals, injecting drug users, health workers, haemophiliacs, those practicing unprotected sex or who have multiple sexual partners, those in prisons and other long stay institutions. There is a high frequency of cases in the tropics and the Mediterranean.

Following infection, the virus has an incubation period of one to six months accompanied by loss of appetite, nausea, joint pain and fever. This is followed by jaundice with itchy skin and an enlarged liver and spleen. Liver damage can often be severe, affecting its function. Those infected can become chronic carriers of the disease (5-10% of cases) and go on to infect other contacts. The disease can also carry some severe complications, including chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, cancer of the liver and liver failure.
