Haemorrhoids (piles) form
when the muscles of the bowel are put under strain and the surrounding
veins are weakened. They are enlarged, blood-filled swellings located
just inside the anus or rectum, sometimes they protrude. Sitting or
standing for long periods, pregnancy and, most commonly, a genetic weakness
of the veins all contribute towards haemorrhoids.
Pain and itching can occur when they bleed and become inflamed. Haemorrhoids
are usually caused by constipation and/or straining when using the toilet
as there is added pressure in the veins.
