Overview for Dietary and Lifestyle or Treatment info
see links at bottom
This word means the development
of breast tissue in a male. The excess of tissue does not usually mean
that it is cancerous. This is common in early puberty as a result of
oestrogen (female) hormone excess and invariably resolves spontaneously.
This can also occur in elderly people and the cause can only be elucidated
by a careful history and examination.
The main causes are as follows:-
Physiological - Neonatal affect of maternal hormones occurring
in old age.
Pelicient Testosterone (Male hormone) - can be due to a disorder
of the pituitary gland in a severe systematic illness or malnuritment.
Oestrogen Producing Tumours - In the testes, adrenal gland. Drugs
Oestrogen, cannabis, heroin, spironoledone, cimetidine.
Over Active Thyroid - This is worrying sign and if it does occur,
produces embarrassment and concern.
Any 'swelling' in the male in this area should be examined as breast
cancer is not confined exclusively to females.
