Gout is an arthritic/rheumatic
complaint caused when crystals of uric acid accumulate in a single joint
(usually the big toe). This causes redness, swelling and inflammation.
Gout is much more common in men than women. Those who suffer from gout
are either overproducing uric acid or are less efficient at disposing
of it. Uric acid is the by-product of the decomposition of certain types
of waste products. It is normally removed during urination, but in those
predisposed to the condition, it builds up in the blood causing the
symptoms described above.
