This syndrome affects about
2-6% of the population and is usually noted at birth. It is unusual
for the mother to present any symptoms during pregnancy, but occasionally
abdominal pain is complained of, loss of appetite or fatigue. The only
presenting sign is a yellow skin (jaundice). Fortunately the main liver
functions remain unaffected, the yellowish colour being due to a disorder
affecting the pigments of bile (bilirubin) which is produced in the
liver.
