Foetal alcohol syndrome

Overview for Dietary and Lifestyle or Treatment info see links at bottom

Excessive intake of alcohol during early pregnancy causes this condition. Evidence has shown that women who consume more than eight units of alcohol a week or more than two units a day are at risk of damaging their unborn babies. Alcohol affects the absorption, metabolism and excretion of various nutrients particularly zinc, magnesium, copper and iron. It may be that trace elements' status is compromised at this early stage. Babies born to women who do drink excessively whilst pregnant have a distinctive set of characteristics shown below:

  • low nasal bridge
  • short nose
  • small eyes
  • large space between eyes
  • are shorter and weigh less
  • below average intelligence
  • learning difficulties
  • delayed development
  • long area between the nose and lips
  • thin upper lip
  • flat midface
  • minor ear abnormalities
  • poor co-ordination
  • hyperactivity
  • attention problems

Research suggests that the babies born to a mother who drinks heavily do not survive. Those who do are often hyperactive and irritable due to alcohol withdrawal.
