Down's syndrome

Overview for Dietary and Lifestyle or Treatment info see links at bottom

This is an inborn condition that occurs as a result of a genetic abnormality, where there is an extra chromosome present (the material carrying the genetic information in cells) in the body cells. This results in there being three number 21 chromosomes instead of two - resulting in a total of 47 chromosomes, rather than the normal 46.

The chances of having a Down's syndrome baby are higher with mothers giving birth at an older age. In the UK, Down's affects about 1000 babies per year. In population terms, that is about one in 700 babies born.

Babies born with Down's have particularly characteristic features.

These include:

  • a flat facial appearance with slanting eyes
  • broad hands with short fingers
  • a single crease across the palm of the hand
  • ear malformations
  • short stature
  • often a degree of mental handicap - although some people may have a normal intelligence

Associated abnormalities include deafness, intestinal malformation, and heart defects (affecting around 40%.) In the past, those suffering heart abnormalities used to have a short life expectancy, but now due to advances in heart surgery, those affected have the chance of living a much longer, healthy life.

The positive point regarding this condition is that they are loveable children who deserve all that can be done for them. Most of them have capabilities which can only been tapped when they are given understanding and a chance to develop in a friendly environment with skilled educators. Most go to school and afterwards can take up remunerative jobs and occupations.
