Overview for Dietary and Lifestyle or Treatment info
see links at bottom
Diverticular disorder is a
common condition that mainly affects the large bowel. Often constipation
precedes it and straining to pass hard stools causes a rupture of the
colon wall forming small pouches or diverticuli. Many people have these,
with no symptoms. However, the pouches may become infected with bacteria
and result in inflammation. The disorder then becomes known as diverticulitis.
Symptoms include pain, sickness, abdominal swelling or fever. There
may alternatively be diarrhoea and constipation. In the acute stage
the temperature and pulse rate may rise.
There is certainly a relation to dietary habits. In western countries
where the diet is low in fibre, the incidents are high. It is rarely
found in African countries.
