Crohn's is a chronic inflammatory
disease. It occurs in patches in the digestive tract, but particularly
in the ileum and the colon. It is the more severe of the two types of
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), the other being Ulcerative Colitis.
The number of people with Crohn's disease has been increasing in recent
years. It is a disease of Western cultures and is most common in the
10-40 age group. The main symptoms are abdominal pain, weight loss,
diarrhoea and anaemia. Bleeding may take place especially in the colon
and the rectum and abscesses and fistulae can cause further complications.
Under-nutrition may occur due to impaired absorption, poor appetite
and nausea. Characterised by periods of remission and relapse, Crohn's
disease, at it's worst can become disabling and even life-threatening.
