The herpes simplex virus causes
cold sores - spots or lesions on the mouth, gums and skin. Stress or
infection will reactivate the virus, which usually lies dormant in the
nerve endings. It can also be triggered by fever, exposure to cold temperature
or ultraviolet, sunburn or nerve injury. Maintaining a healthy immune
system is essential for keeping cold sores under control.
