It has to be said that breast-fed
babies hardly ever develop constipation. This is because breastmilk
contains a natural laxative so that the baby does not produce hard motions.
In those who are bottle fed, there are several ways symptoms may present.
The baby may have infrequent movements and the motion will be hard.
However, you have to remember that at this early stage, you do not really
know what the baby's normal rhythm is and it may be that this is normal.
The baby may be irritable and blood may be noticed in the motion. This
could simply be due to blood from a crack in the anal area, caused by
the passage of a hard stool.
If a baby or child does not drink enough for whatever reason, fluid
is withdrawn from the stool which makes it hard. Small children may
find passing these hard motions painful and become too frightened to
try. The problem may be compounded by worried parents. If the condition
persists, the child may feel pain and dicomfort, appear lethargic or
out of sorts and loose stools may leak from the full rectum.
If bouts of constipation appear to increase, then a medical opinion
should be sought, however, if it only happens infrequently, this may
be a normal pattern for the child and he should be encouraged to pass
the stool in his own time.
