This is the name given to the operation in which a baby is delivered through an incision in the lower abdominal wall. The term "Caesarean" was adopted as it was thought that Caesar, a Roman Emperor had been born by this method. As the number of caesarean births have risen in the UK in the last few years and the financial implications are such that the cost per year is £80m, then it was thought expedient that this matter be investigated. It was found on scrutiny of the situation by the Royal College of Gynaecologists commissioned by the Government, that 1 in 5 babies had been born by this method. One major point being looked at by the College is whether the rate of Caesareans is on the increase because women wish to have their children born by caesarean. They also have to take into consideration why it is that the number of caesareans vary geographically. Is it due to different policies adopted in different areas by Obstetricians? In America, in some areas, there was concern expressed at the mounting requests for Caesarean births. One factor other than financial consideration is that a Caesarean is a surgical operation as opposed to a normal delivery. It appeared probable that the wish for a Caesarean in some countries does stem from mothers request.. The report of Royal College is awaited with interest from that point of view and also their commentary on varying attitudes in different areas of the country.
