Bronchitis (chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease) arises when the mucus membranes in the airways (bronchi)
of the lung become inflamed.
Acute bronchitis
This is caused by viral or bacterial infections and causes coughing
and the production of sputum, often containing pus, from the lungs.
Narrowing of the airways also occurs within the lungs due to contraction
of the muscle in the airways.
Chronic bronchitis
With this condition, the patient coughs up large amounts of mucus, produced
by enlarged mucus producing glands in the walls of the lung airways.
This coughing is often accompanied by wheezing and breathing difficulties
and often results in a lack of oxygen getting into the blood. The airways
in the lungs are narrowed and blocked with mucus, and drug therapy to
open them up again is often ineffective. This form of bronchitis is
often complicated by lung infections that can produce a fever, painful
coughing and worsening of the symptoms.
