Bi-polar disorder is a mood
disorder characterized by recurring mood swings from mania (exaggerated
feeling of happiness and inflated self-esteem) to extreme episodes of
depression. In the manic phase of the condition, which can last for
a few days to a few months, sufferers will feel irrationally elated,
distracted and possibly hyperactive. This is followed by the depressive
stage, when lack of motivation, unhappiness and even suicidal tendencies
are common. Hereditary and psychological factors may contribute to the
condition, but the exact cause is unknown. Bi-polar disorder usually
first appears between the ages of 15 and 25.
