Autism is defned as a mental
disorder characterised by learning difficulties. Classical autism is
a developmental brain disorder, beginning in childhood usually manifesting
itself by the age of three. Affecting an estimated one in five hundred
individuals, this disorder results in a limited social interaction,
where the child seems to be isolated in his/her own world and have an
inability to relate to fellow children. Verbal and non-verbal communication
is severely impaired and there may be an unusual and sometimes volatile
responses to touch, sound and other sensory stimuli. Other characteristics
are: extreme self obsoption and a strong resistance to change in familiar
surroundings. Epilepsy may develop in some autistic children. And seizures
may be accompanied by a sudden charged outburst. There is generally
a high level of untapped intelligence.
The child has a restricted range of activities and often engages in
repetitive actions or body movements, such as rocking back and forth.
These repeated, rhythmic movements may be carried out for comfort and
also, for stimulation, as autistics may be cut off from the stimuli
most of us receive. The intense focus on visual and spatial tasks means
that some autistic children display tremendous skills in drawing or
with numbers and puzzles. Likewise, there may be strong connections
with nature.
From a study by Stephen Edelson (Centre for Study on Autism, Salem and
Oregan): Autistic children typically have problems understanding what
has been said to them. This lack of comphrehension is sometimes not
understood by those looking after them and this can result in repremands
thereby causing more problems for the Autistic child.
Genetics and environmental factors may have a role in causing autism.
It occurs in four times as many men as women. Secondary, autism is caused
by a brain disease. As it occurs later in life, patients with this disorder
may be more accessible, due to their memories, prior to the damage.
It is thought that Autism affects, in some way or other, many people
in the UK, the exact number is not known but it runs into thousands.
Many questions remain regarding Autism. One in particular at the moment
has initiated considerable dscussion. It is:
Does the administration of the triple vaccine M.M.R. play a role in
Autism?
