This inflammatory disorder
affects males, usually young men. It is a problem of the back. Women
are affected but, symptoms are often less severe. The primary characteristics
include pain and stiffness in the lower back. This tends to become worse
as time goes on and ultimately the area affected is unable to move.
The spine exhibits loss of curvature, which produces marked changes
in posture. At the same time there is a reduction in the chest expansion.
Other problems may be directly related to the connective system, and
include inflammation of the large posterior tendon of the leg (the Achilles);
an inflammation of the foscia (connecting tissue of bones - mainly in
the feet) and others involve other parts of the body such as the eye
(iritis) and on rare instances there may be heart conduction defects.
Severe cases may result in rigidity of the spine, which may cause fusion
and an increased risk of fractures.
