Researchers in Canada report
that a lack of folic acid significantly increases the risk of death
from coronary heart disease. Their study began in 1970 and involved
5056 men and women aged 35-79 years old. During the 15 year follow up
period, there were 165 deaths from coronary heart disease. The researchers
concluded that people with low serum folic acid have a 69% greater risk
of dying from coronary heart disease than to people with high levels.
Low folic acid serum levels have also been linked to increased risk
of carotid artery stenosis, neuro tube defects, cervical displasia and
rectal cancer.
88% of American adults consume less folic acid than they need to maintain
health.
The researches also point out that the bioavailability of folic acid
from food is significantly higher than from chemically produced folic
acid supplements. |
